About Matona
Matona was founded in 2016 from a simple idea: Katharina sewed her son’s clothes herself. Those first one-off pieces soon became small batches; the small batches led to the first orders from shops; and what began at the sewing table in Vorarlberg has grown into a fashion label that is now run as a family-owned business by Katharina and David.
What began with children’s clothing grew alongside the founder’s own family: the women’s collection was born out of the same desire to create clothing that accommodates different body shapes throughout pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond. Today, ten years on, Matona has expanded to over 100 retailers in more than 30 countries, guided by the same principles on which it all began.
Our Story
Matona designs clothing for the whole family – women, men and children – based on a clear philosophy: timeless rather than seasonal. Our silhouettes are deliberately understated, our colours subtle, and our cuts designed to last. We do not follow short-lived trends, but design pieces that will remain a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.
This approach starts with the materials and extends right down to the finest details: minimalist in design, yet meticulously crafted. What is bought today should still be just right in five years’ time, both for the children who are growing into it and for the adults who will wear it for a long time to come.
HOW OUR CLOTHING IS MADE
Our collections are manufactured exclusively in European facilities, in close, long-standing collaboration with a carefully selected network of family-run manufacturers, whom we visit in person. The majority of these facilities are certified in accordance with the social and environmental guidelines of the GOTS standard.
For us, this means: short transport routes, personal relationships rather than anonymous supply chains, and direct communication with the people who bring our designs to life. A large proportion of our products are also GOTS-certified – this is indicated individually on each product page so that you can see exactly what applies to each item.
MATERIALS AND TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP
For us, every garment begins with the choice of material. Our collections feature organic cotton, linen, cashmere, wool, as well as Tencel and ECONYL®. What matters most to us is how a material feels to wear, how it ages, and how it develops its own character over time.
Some of our materials are GOTS-certified. Our products are made in workshops, most of which are family-run, where design meets tradition – places where craftsmanship has been passed down through the years and remains evident in every detail of our collections.
